How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?
There are different types and degrees of dental
sedation offered in the office of Jonathan H.
Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose
Dentists Specialists Centers; the moderate
sedation with oral sedatives or nitrous oxide,
or deeper sedation with intravenous drugs.
Nitrous Oxide
provided from Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc. –
Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists
Centers is administered through a nasal hood,
which is similar to a small cup placed over your
nose. It is often given to those who do not want
full sedation dentistry, but still want
something to help them relax. It is extremely
safe because it is mixed directly with oxygen to
provide you with a feeling of happiness and
well-being. The nitrous oxide acts quickly,
provides a flexible duration and level of
sedation, produces little grogginess after
treatment and causes no side effects – all while
helping to take the edge off a patient’s
anxiety.
Other forms of sedation include Oral
(pills taken by mouth) Sedation. Patient
will take a pill prescribed by Jonathan H. Kim,
D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists
Specialists Centers prior to treatment and must
be accompanied by someone. Though completely
relaxed, patient will be awake enough to respond
to their dentist. It helps the body to relax and
permits more effective dental visit, allowing
much more to be accomplished while eliminating
concerns about discomfort and pain.
Just like other forms of
sedation dentistry,
IV Sedation is designed to relax you and
make you completely comfortable. In Jonathan H.
Kim, D.D.S., Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose
Dentists Specialists Centers, we are proud to
have one of the very few dentists licensed to
practice I.V sedation. Most offices only give
pills to relax you but in the office of Dr. Kim,
we perform I.V Sedation which is safer and more
reliable. A patient is given a medication
intravenously and monitored with heart rate,
blood pressure, and pulse thru the entire
procedure. This type of sedation eliminates your
anxiety and pain. If you have a bad gag reflex
or difficulty sitting in a dental chair for long
periods, IV sedation will help you with that as
well.
The Facts of Sedation
Dentistry
When
you are afraid, you become hypersensitive to
every noise and sensation and your threshold for
pain is much lower. Fear and dental anxiety
trigger the release of certain chemicals in your
brain that put your “fight or flight” instincts
on high alert in which it makes you anticipate
that something is going to hurt you and you
tense your muscles. Patients who have a fear of
the dentist often experience more pain during
and after their procedure because of that
reason. However with the help of sedation
dentistry provided by Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S.,
Inc. – Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists
Specialists Centers, that can virtually be
eliminated. It allows you to let your guard
down, relax both your body and mind, and focus
on feeling peaceful rather than anxious. Your
apprehension and hypersensitivity to pain will
dissipate.
Because you are completely relaxed, your dentist
can accomplish more high-quality dentistry in
less time. You’ll be so relaxed that you’ll be
unaware of the sights, smells, and sounds of the
dental office. Patients remember
little-to-nothing of their appointment by the
next day.
Commonly Asked
Questions
Will I feel any pain?
No. You will feel nothing!
Will I be totally
relaxed?
You’ll receive just enough sedation so that
you’ll be completely unaware of the treatment as
if you were asleep.
Will I remember
anything?
At the end of the treatment, you’ll have little
or no memory of what was accomplished.
Will someone need to
accompany me?
Yes, due to the sedative effects of the
medication, you will not be able to drive.
Is sedation dentistry
safe?
Yes. Oral sedation dentistry protocols have been
used safely over 30 years in millions of dental
procedures.

Periodontics is
the branch of dentistry concerned with the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases
affecting the gums and supporting structures of
the teeth. Implant Dentistry is the area of oral
health concerned with restoring natural form and
function to areas where teeth have been lost. I
am focused with not only restoring the mouth to
a healthy condition, but also in developing a
plan to minimize future treatment needs. I have
been performing periodontal and dental implant
surgeries for over twenty three years, providing
patients with a combination of experience and
state of the art treatment. Patient comfort is
my highest priority and I have experience in
providing many options to assist patients,
including sedation. I am a life long Bay Area
native and feel very fortunate to practice close
to where I grew up. Excellent oral health is an
important part in the quality of all of our
lives.
