Root
Canal San Jose - What is Endodontics or Root
Canal Treatment?
Endodontics by Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc

Centers is the branch of dentistry that deals
with diseases of the tooth pulp and the tissues
surrounding the root of a tooth. In the old
days, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve,
you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a
special dental procedure called a root canal
therapy you may save that tooth.
A root canal therapy is a treatment used to
repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or
infected. During this procedure, the pulp and
nerves are removed and the inside of the root
canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it.
Then your dentist at Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S.,
Inc Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists
Centers will place a crown over the tooth to
help make it stronger.
Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively
simple procedure with little or no discomfort
involving one to three visits. Best of all, it
can save your tooth and your smile!
Endodontists San Jose Why Choose Endodontists
over General Dentists?
Endodontists limit their
practices to do only root canal therapy and
other endodontic treatments. Endodontists not
only graduate from dental school but also
complete a minimum of two years of postdoctoral
specialist education. They are the dentists who
are trained in oral pathology, how to treat the
difficult cases of root canals and how to do
microperiapical surgery to save the teeth.
General dentists refer their patients to an
endodontists when they feel that the treatment
may be more challenging or when the diagnosis is
complicated. Here, at Jonathan H. Kim,
D.D.S.,Inc Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists
Specialists Centers, not only the endodontist is
available to help patients but also equipped
with the specialized Operating Microscopes which
enhance the capability of technical precision
during the root canal therapy.
San Jose Root Canal - Who Needs Root Canal
Treatment?
Root Canal Therapy is needed for two main
reasons: infection or irreversible damage to the
pulp. The common cause of pulp infection is an
untreated cavity. The decays wear away the
enamel and dentin of the tooth, causing the
tooth to opens into the root canal system. This
allows bacteria to infect the pulp and will lead
to inflammation. The inflammation will restrict
the blood supply to the tooth which will limit
the pulps ability to heal itself.
When a tooths nerve tissue or pulp is damaged,
it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply
within the pulp chamber. These bacteria and
other decayed debris can cause an infection or
abscessed tooth. An abscess occurs when the
infection spreads all the way past the ends of
the roots of the tooth.
In addition to an abscess, an infection in the
root canal of a tooth can cause swelling that
may spread to other areas of the face, neck or
head; bone loss around the tip of the root or
drainage problems extending outward from the
root.
In many cases, when the pulp is inflamed but not
infected, it can heal itself and return to
normal. Your dentist at Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S.,
Inc Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists Specialists
Centers will monitor the tooth to see if this
happens before doing root canal therapy.
It is better to keep your natural teeth if at
all possible. If a tooth is missing, neighboring
teeth can drift out of line and can be
overstressed. Keeping your natural teeth also
helps you to avoid extensive and more expensive
treatments, such as implants or bridges. If an
infected or injured tooth is left untreated, not
only you can lose the tooth but also the
infection can spread to other parts of your
body.
Root Canals San Jose CA - When is Root Canal
Treatment Needed?
You may not feel any pain at first when you have
an infection in the pulp. However, if the tooth
is left untreated, the infection will cause pain
and swelling. In some cases, an abscess will
form. Eventually, the tooth may need to be
extracted. Some indications that a tooth may
need a root canal treatment are:
▪ A tooth that hurts significantly
when you bite down on it, touch it or push on it
▪ Sensitivity to heat
▪ Sensitivity to cold that lasts
longer than a couple of seconds
▪ Swelling near the affected tooth
▪ A discolored tooth, with or without
pain
▪ A broken tooth
San Jose CA Root Canal - How Long Does It
Take To Do A Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment can be done in one or more
visits, depending on the situation. An infected
tooth will need several appointments to make
sure that the infection is eliminated
completely. Some teeth may take longer or may be
more difficult to treat due to the position of
the tooth, curved root canals or for other
reasons. An uncomplicated root canal treatment
often can be completed in one visit. Once the
root canal treatment is finished, your doctor
from Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc Top Best *8*

restore the structure of your tooth with crown
or filling.
San
Jose Root Canals - Procedures for Root Canal
Treatment
Measuring Root Canal Length
First, your root canal specialist or endodontist
from Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc Top Best *8*
San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers will numb
the area around the tooth. You also may receive
sedation, such as nitrous oxide, or your dentist
may offer other anxiety-reducing techniques if
you feel you need them. He will make a hole in
the top or back of your tooth to get to the pulp
chamber. He will then remove some of the
diseased pulp. Then the root canals are
measured.
Your dentist needs to know how long the canals
are so he can make sure all the diseased tissue
is removed and the entire canal is cleaned.
Also, the material used to fill the canal after
it is cleaned needs to fill the entire canal.
Your doctor will use radiograph pictures to
determine the length of the canals or use an
electric device called an apex locator. In the
first procedure, your dentist will place a file
into the canal he is measuring then take an
X-ray to determine how close the file is to the
end of the canal. An apex locator makes a
calculation based on the resistance to a small
electric current. This gives an accurate
measurement of a root canal. Often, the two
methods are combined.
Cleaning Root Canals
After the canals have been measured, your root
canal specialist or endodontist from Jonathan H.
Kim, D.D.S., Inc Top Best *8* San Jose
Dentists Specialists Centers will use the
specially designed instruments to clean out the
diseased pulp. After the pulp has been removed,
the canal is cleaned with an antiseptic solution
to treat the source of the infection.
To achieve an effective root canal treatment,
all the canals must be cleaned thoroughly. In
general, the top front teeth have one canal, the
bottom front teeth have one or two canals, the
premolars one or two and the molars three or
four canals. However, these canals vary in
location and shape so that your endodontist are
now using a microscope to see inside the tooth
to make sure all the canals have been located
and all the pulp has been removed and cleaned
Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned and
the infection has been removed, the roots are
now filled. A temporary filling is then placed
to cover the new root filling. The crown of the
tooth should then be restored with a permanent
filling or crown within a relatively short time.
Crowns After Root Canal Therapy
In most cases, the tooth will need a crown,
especially with molars that are under stress
from chewing. A crown will help to restore the
tooth's strength and protect it from cracking. A
crown should be placed as soon as possible,
ideally within a month of the root canal. It's
important to get the tooth permanently restored
to prevent damage to the tooth later. The
temporary filling you receive is not meant to
last.
The pulp that was removed during root canal
treatment is the part that responds to
temperature. The tissues and nerves surrounding
your tooth remain, however, so your tooth will
still respond to pressure and touch.
Root Canals San Jose - After Root Canal
Therapy
For the first few days following the completion
of a root canal, the tooth may feel sensitive
due to natural tissue inflammation, especially
if there was pain or infection before the
procedure. This sensitivity or discomfort
usually can be controlled with over-the-counter
pain medications such as ibuprofen. Most
patients can return to their normal activities
the next day. You are probably told by our staff
at Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc Top Best *8*
San Jose Dentists Specialists Centers to avoid
chewing on the affected side. The worse the
infection and inflammation was prior to root
canal treatment, the sorer the tooth will be
after treatment. You can take over-the-counter
pain relievers to ease the discomfort.
Root Canals San Jose California - Root Canal
Complications
As with the most invasive medical or dental
procedures, complications can occur. Here are
some possibilities.
Sometimes when a root canal is opened for
treatment, the oxygen in the air will trigger
some bacteria to start growing, causing
inflammation and pain.
Bacteria may get pushed out through the apex of
the root, causing the blood vessels to enter the
tooth through this apex of the root. Sometimes
during a root canal procedure, bacteria are
pushed out through this hole into surrounding
tissue causing the inflammation and possible
infection. This can be treated with pain
reliever and antibiotics but the site could be
remained painful until it clears up.
San Jose CA Root Canals Pain after Root
Canal
Pain Management after Root Canal Therapy
In most cases, you will not experience any pain
during the root canal procedure. Your root canal
specialist or endodontists from Jonathan H. Kim,
D.D.S., Inc Top Best *8* San Jose Dentists
Specialists Centers will completely numb your
tooth and the surrounding area. If this doesn't
seem to be working, alert your dentist right
away. Some people fear the anesthetic injections
more than the procedure itself, but numbing gels
and modern injection systems have made
injections virtually painless. Let your dentist
know immediately and he can modify the technique
to avoid repeating the pain.
Sedation with Root Canal Treatment
In addition
to anesthetic, you may receive sedation, such as
nitrous oxide treatment, Oral sedation or IV
sedation. Call Jonathan H. Kim, D.D.S., Inc
